Monday with the servers

Filed under: Linux — ivan @ 11:54 am

I am in the Burnside basement now. There is a perceptible hum coming from the server room next door. The machines are quite impressive, all nice and shiny big iron racks with famous names like sgi and IBM. It feels a bit like the frozen food section of a large supermarket, becuase there are alternate air currnets of freezing cold air from the air conditioning and warm air coming our from some server.

This is the future. Lots of machines. All running happily next to each other with thick lensed administrators walking around and keeping things in check.

I am starting to like my job. There is lots of challenging things to learn and I have lots of free time to work on them these days. Do linux on the desktop!

three register virtual machine

this is all it takes to write virtually optimal assembler code “for accessing data”. At least that is what this guy thinks: SQLite inventor Richard Hipp .

Another quote:

There is this myth that people in the open source community will help you fix
bugs that is not true — they will help you find them, but you are completely on your own to fix them.

I am going to have fun next year when I will have to study for database systems….

I just noticed that my domain is on parking. What the f**k?

dev is me

When you don’t have anything good to say, you should probably not say anything…. right?
I have been looking at “the frameworks” these days and I can’t say I am impressed. You get a lot of things for free (database manipulation, CRUD, user management, template system) but also you are locked in to the platform.

On one hand, being an expert in Plone looks like it could be a good thing for employment sake. On the other hand it is some pretty heavy stuff by any standards. Django seems to be a leaner MVC-style framework but it is a brand new “thing” to learn.

Overall, I must say that web-dev-frameworks are not quite ready for prime time. In a couple of years things hopefully will have settled down (Zope 3?, django 1.0, …) and people will have figured out how to do the basics and also use javascript nicely within the framework.

It seems…. it seems I should continue learning how to program basics and not try to adopt some framework…. things will works so much faster if I was using some framework though… enough bullshit — let’s code

The road to success is long and dangerous. And there will be a heavy load to carry….
