Last day in Calgary

Filed under: Travel — ivan @ 5:22 pm

There were 40 beers. Now they are no more. The waterloo people and I drank them.
Waterloo must be a terrible place because these people look like they have suffered through a lot.
I learned a very cool german game — now converted into a dirnking game.
There was one guy playing poker on his laptop and we couldn’t do much to extract him from the captivating glow ot the computer screen.
I went for cigarette brakes with Mattias who’s a cool guy. Thanks to Sean the evening was much better.

I don’t feel as sick as after COWBOYS though. The beer must have been better last night.
Now it is time to clear-up the room and check-out before someone charges me something.

I’m going to chill with Sean somewhere today and be on my way to Vancouver with the 7AM flight.
I am keeping the laptop with me…. not the wisest decision probably but since noone was willing to take it back i am stuck with it.

I gave the 100players +100boxes with names + death problem to some very very smart people and they were thinking about it yesterday. The CS guy is on the right way and he will crack it sooner or later. Maybe i should give him the tip: [tex]S_{100}[/tex].

Now lets do work!

PCs for Bulgaria

Filed under: Computers, Linux, Political, Minireference — ivan @ 10:54 am

How about collecting old PC hardware and shipping it over to BG?
One could also setup a simple server in each school that mirrors wikipedia (without edit) and other freely available documents.
I am thinking it could also support pirated repositories of .djvu books…. (not mp3’s though and not avi’s)
Basically you are offering a server with debian pre-installed on which apache and SAMBA are serving a huge collection of information. (investment 100$ for a HD)
It would be pretty simple…. school orders one, a image is installed on the drive, a volunteer from a bg-lug visits the school and intalls it on their network and shows them how to access/administer it.
The entire wikipedia database is 12Gb and if you include all the images it is 60Gb.
It would certainly cut down on the need for high speed in places like Petkovo….

I am thinking a filesystem-like structure for documentation which you can browse via HTTP (Zope?) but it automatically caches things to local disk also.
And when you are building a local repository you can just click a few checkboxes and apt-get the required packages in a debian fashion.

call it localhost? edu server? edu cache?

Home Theatre Projector

Filed under: Computers — ivan @ 12:39 pm

Wow. This site is amazing.
I should get back to my old bricoleur-self and build myself a projector. I almost bought one for 650$ this week but then I decided that it is stupid to waste money on luxury items.

The idea is simple and requires very little parts:

  1. LCD panel from a regular 15” flat panel monitor. (can buy broken one from eBay) (smaller laptop LCD?)
  2. 3 lenses (thin fresnel lenses to collect the light and one to project it onto the wall)
  3. Crazy Light bulb and high-voltage power supply
  4. Cooling fans (worth investing in silent ones probably)
  5. A Box

First I need to setup a bricolage corner somewhere in the house. A wall with tools and a work area designated for that purpose. It is clear that I am not going to do any studying from home so I could rearrange the desk for that purpose. I forgot what Vlad was calling it but he had a station like that in his former basement…
